When you study geography, you generally learn about where countries are and their landforms. You usually also learn something about the culture. It is important to know something about geography because those people in other nations do share a globe with us. You don't want to be one of those people who can tell you all about the latest in the Paris Hilton drama but yet are completely ignorant about people and places on the other side of our world. Seriously, you don't want to have to ask, "Where is Bulgaria?" when your neighbor is telling you about his recent vacation there. If you couldn't tell me what continent Bulgaria is on (Europe), maybe you should study a bit of geography. For a start you can see the WikiAnswers question "Where is Bulgaria?" It is one of the related questions.

Here are some reasons to study geography:

  • Anything you study makes you smarter!
  • It's useful to learn about the world you live in and where everything is
  • Learning about other countries helps you to understand and tolerate other people instead of fighting or hating them
  • Learning about different parts of the earth helps you understand how everything works together on a planet
  • Learning about the world teaches you how important it is to keep the environment and living things in balance
  • Geography teaches important skills such as reading different types of maps

It's important because it helps us learn more about the world that God created and we can appreciate it more. We don't only learn about physical geography, but also human geography. We learn about different countries' religions, cultures, economies, etc.
It is natural for us to know more about our environment and the worl we live in.
It help you better understand Earth's features.

Physical geography is a key to understanding history, economics, weather, resource management, and humanity in general. Mountains divide us and hide precious minerals and metals which have great value to the common man and corporation. Rivers can also divide us, but they do a much better job at uniting a people along its length, as they provide water for farms and a method of transport to its mouth. Rivers were essential to trade for thousands of years, and still remain an important part of many countries (i.e., the Mississippi, the Nile, the Rhine, the Yangzte, the Colorado).

The physical geography of our planet determines what parts are wet, dry, cold, warm, which ones experience powerful hurricanes and which get torrential rainstorms. It determines the ability of central California to produce billions of dollars of agricultural product every year, and the ability of Chile to produce our foods during their summer/our winter. It determines Colorado's dry eastern slope and California's bog-like Sierra river valleys. It determines where people can build houses, and where people want to build houses.

Physical geography simply explains to us what we already know, but barely understand. It helps us know not that it is hot as hell, but why it is hot. Geography is the "why of where," and knowing the answer to a question such as "why is it so hot" can help us determine the answer to the question "what needs to happen to cool things down a bit." Not the best answer I'm sure, but I tried :P
