variegated plant cells are deficient in chlorophyll hence these are not capable of carrying out photosynthesis so efficiently, hence less vigorous.

∙ 10y agoBasically, they have less chlorophyl in them. Thats the green stuff that turns sunlight into energy, via photosynthesis, so less 'green' means less ability to make food.
