Athens is named after it's patron goddess Pallas Athene, or Athena. Athena won the rights to being patron of the city when she produced the olive tree, beating the salt water spring that Poseidon (her competition who was also vying for patron) created. Thus, the city was named in her honor. That is also why the Parthenon (a temple dedicated to her) is located in the agora of Athens.

Two Gods, Athena and Poseidon, fought over who got a city named after them. They decided that whom ever gave the mortals the best gift, won. Poseidon , God of the sea and earthquakes, gave us a stream. It was salty, so we didn't like to drink it. Athena gave the humans an olive tree. We could use it for olive oil, olives, and wood that burnt very long. Now, not only is Athens named after Athena, but the olive tree is one of Athena's many symbols. Hope this helps and good luck (;

The Naming of Athens, I suspect. They aren't always "named" or "titled" like stories.
