During WW2 the Timorese risked life and limb to protect Australian soldier engaged in fighting against the Japanese. When Timor was invaded by the Indonesians with the knowledge and clandestine approval of the Australian Government ( they were about to divy up oil revenues that were going to be made in the Timor sea) This became plain and eventualy the Australian Govt was shamed into coming to the aid of theyr old ally, the Timorise, with the UN to throw out the Indonesians. this done Australia maintains a military presence in east Timor to help rebuild and keep the peace.

During 1999 and 2000 about 6,000 Australian troops were stationed in East Timor as part of a United Nations effort to help the country establish itself after its vote to return to independence from Indonesia.

Many older people, and many commentators, have been conscious of what they saw as a debt that Australia owed to East Timor, partly for letting it be taken by Indonesia in 1975, but partly because of the help given by so many East Timorese to Australian troops fighting Japan during World War 2.

UNTAET's mandate expired with East Timor's independence on 20 May 2002. A peacekeeping mission, the UN Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) was then established to provide assistance to the new East Timorese Government in the areas of public administration, Law and Order and external security.

A smaller political mission, the United Nations Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) replaced UNMISET on 20 May 2005. UNOTIL was established to carry out peace-building activities and support the capacity development of state institutions, including the National Police (PNTL), to strengthen democratic governance and to help build peace in East Timor.

UNOTIL was replaced by the current UN Integrated Mission to Timor-Leste (UNMIT) on 25 August 2006 following a serious deterioration in the security situation in April and May 2006. UNMIT has focused on policing functions and police training, political and community reconciliation, assistance for elections and humanitarian relief services. On 23 February 2012, the UN Security Council extended UNMIT's mandate for a further year until the end of 2012. Australia contributes police personnel to UNMIT.

Australia leads the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) that was requested by the East Timorese Government to help restore stability following the unrest experienced in 2006. The ISF was originally comprised of Australian and New Zealand soldiers, and police from Portugal and Malaysia. After UNMIT was established the ISF was comprised of Australian and New Zealand soldiers. The ISF operates independently from, but in support of, UNMIT.

What were the causes of the East Timor conflict?

East Timor Conflict.Prior to WWII, East Timor was a Portuguese colony in what was then the Dutch East Indies. The Netherlands claimed the western portion of the island and the Portuguese the eastern. Following the war, the Dutch East Indies gained its independence and was renamed Indonesia. East Timor was retained as a colony until the Portuguese left the East Timor. To prevent the communist party, the Fretilin regined, The USA supported anti-communist Indonesia effort to annexed the land to Indonesia. The conflict over east Timor was as a result of its control over oil resources and Indonesias appetite for control over as much teritory as posible. Indonesia is a nation made up of many different islands peoples and cultures. when the deal was done that Java was to become the overlord of the area after the Dutch left, East Timor (a Portuguese was in a position to refuse to become part off this newly formed dictatorship. Eventually however after they became independent they were in invaded by the Indonesians with the tacit approval of the Australians as they both intended to share in the oil wealth that was in the east Timor sea. The Timorese were brave Allies to the Australians during WW 2 and many fair minded Australians felt Australia should have come to the aid of the east Timorese rather then leaving them at the mercy of a murderous Indonesian regime They agitated and eventually shamed the Australian government into coming to the aid of WW2 ally. (This was the first place Australia helped that wasn't an a American or English military action.) Australian weaponry has been used throughout the conflict to kill innocent Timorese and Australian reporters reporting on the conflict.
