Brown v. Board of Education, (1954) was reargued for two reasons:

  1. The case was originally argued December 9, 1952, but Chief Justice Fred Vinson died before the Court reached a decision.
  2. In considering the constitutionality of Plessy v. Ferguson, and its impact on education, the Court asked each of the attorneys in the case to answer five questions regarding the Framer's intent when creating the 14th Amendment, and whether it was intended to allow for segregation, particularly in education.

Brown was reargued on December 8, 1953, almost a year to the day after the original presentation. The Warren Court overturned Plessy v. Ferguson, and ruled in favor of the Plaintiffs in May 1954, putting an end to de jure (legal) segregation.
