Edward was called Edward the Confessor as he was a very holy man and would often go to church and confess to sins. The title "confessor" also distinguished this Edward from Edward the Martyr (c962-979). Edward was later made a saint, due to his building of Westminster Abbey and efforts in other churches. He was famous for his religious devotions.

He was a man of holy life with the title of "the Confessor" because of how often he went to church to confess his sins at the church. He was later made a saint after his work was recognised for building Westminster abbey and his effort in the building and refurbishing of other churches too.

He rebuilt the and erected churches and monasteries in different parts of England.

He is also famous for being a good Military leader.

When the king was told the number of soldiers Malcolm would probably need he gave orders for double that number to march into Scotland. Malcolm with this support attacked Macbeth, and after several well-fought battles drove the usurper from Scotland and took possession of the throne.

Norwegian pirates, lead by a barbarian named Kerdric often came sweeping down upon the Kentish coast in many ships, make a landing where there were no soldiers, and fall upon the towns and plunder them. Then, they would sail away homeward, before they could be captured. One day Kerdic's fleet arrived off the coast, and as no opposing force was visible, the pirates landed and started toward the nearest town to plunder it. By a quick march a body of English soldiers reached the town before the pirates, and when the latter arrived they found a strong force drawn up to give them battle. A short struggle took place. More than half of the pirates were slain and the remainder were taken prisoners.

He is famous for maintaining a peaceful reign.

For the first eight years of his reign there was perfect peace in his kingdom, he only went to war to push back a Welsh invasion and to help Malcolm III of Scotland against Macbeth. The threatened invasion from Canute's son, Sweyn of Norway and the ambitions of Earl Godwin was settled without bloodshed because of his calm and gentle nature.

Edward was long supposed to have made many just laws, and years after his death the English people, when suffering from bad government, would exclaim, "Oh, for the good laws and customs of Edward the Confessor!"

However Edward did cause chaos after e died.

Edward was married twice but had taken a vow of celibacy, so his relationship with the queen was as brother and sister. When Edward died in 1066, he left England in a state of chaos. He had no heir and many of the contesting nobles claimed that Edward had promised the kingdom to them. Inevitably, the rival claimants to the throne fought out a series of battles, which eventually resulted in William the

Conqueror snatching the throne.

In appearance he is said to have white hair, a long beard and weak, pale, thin hands with a pale prudish complexion.

He could also be seen as weak for leaving no heir.
