Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was a nurse who received her nickname during the Crimean War. She cared for wounded patients 20 to 22 hours a day, even at all hours of the night. That's why the injured soldiers called her The Lady with the Lamp.
Because of her work to educate nurses, she is considered one of the founders of modern nursing.
Florence Nightingale lived during the Crimean War, fought from October 1853 to March 1856 . She was born into wealth but felt a calling (from God) to be of service to British soldiers injured during the war. She carried an oil lamp because there was no electricity. Throughout the night, she moved from man to man to help them as best she could, tended their wounds, give them water to drink, and make sure they were covered and warm in the cold nights.
Florence Nightingale is known as the Mother of Nursing, just as Hippocrates from ancient times is known as the Father of Medicine.
