Befor being thrown in jail Galileo was claiming that the world was going around the sun. This was a crime against church for they believed that the sun was going around the earth. however since Galileo was so old, for the last eight years of his life he was confined to his house outside of florence. he became completely blind in 1638 and suferd from a hernia an insomnia, so he was allowed to travel to florence to seek midical advice. He continued to receive visitors until 1642, when, after suffering fever and heart palpitations, he died.

In the times of Galileo, the Roman Cahtholic church had lots of power. The church believed the universe was geocentric (centeres around the earth). Galileo, though, thought that the universe was heliocentric (centered around the sun). Because he went against the church, he was put in jail.

Those who stick their heads in the sand (Christians) will tell you that he was housed in luxury accommodations. The truth is, during his trial his freedom was taken from him. If you don't define that as being in jail, then he wasn't jailed.

If you don't hear the tree fall in the forest...

And if you don't believe that Bush and Cheney didn't torture, then they didn't torture.

His discoveies were considered to be outrageous and people thought that he was lying. Lots of people back then still believed that gods had power over the sky.

-------------------------------------------------

He promoted the theory of Copernicus that the Sun is at the centre of the solar system, with the Earth going round. It predicted the planets' movements quite accurately and Galileo was allowed to teach it as a useful model.

But when he said that theology was wrong and that the Sun actually is at the centre, the Vatican replied that if it could be proved, they would have to reconsider the scriptures, but it had not happened yet. Galileo answered with a book that portrayed the Pope as simple-minded, and after that he was put on trial and had to admit there was no proof.

Protestant PR seized on the episode to discredit the Catholic church by saying the Vatican was attempting to suppress the truth.

After Isaac newton's theories had been developed later, it was realised that the Sun is 330,000 times more massive than the Earth and the Sun must be at the centre, which is now generally agreed.
