___

Germany was divided into 4 occupation zones by the victorious Allied Powers which were the United States, the USSR, Britain and France. The division was formalized at the Potsdam Conference (July 17-August 2, 1945). The purpose of this division was to implement the decisions made at the conference in Yalta on Feb 4 - 11 1945. These decisions were to divide Germany into 4 occupational zones under a unified control commission. Each country would control a part of Germany until its sovereignty was restored. They wanted to make sure that the Nazi party would not regain control and reestablish their military.

It was only divided into 2. And it was because after WW 1 the allies let it be Germany but with a reduced army. That didnt stop Germany from starting WW 2 tho. So they split it into East and West Germany because they didnt want this to ever happen again.
