"Bleeding Kansas" was a term coined and used by Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune to describe the violent hostilities between pro and antislavery forces in the Kansas territory during the mid and late 1850s.

Bloody Kansas became the nickname of Kansas. The Missouri Compromise said that whatever the people of Kansas wanted, slaves or no slaves would be decided by who lived there. So lots of people from both sides moved to Kansas and there were many fights. Abolitionist John Brown tried to influence people against slavery. Thugs from Missouri came to push for slavery. Federal troops had to be called in to bring peace and stop the murders. There were four constitutions for Kansas. The Topeka Constitution would have banned slavery. The Lecompton Constitution allowed slavery. The Leavenworth Constitution would have made Blacks citizens and given women rights. The Wyandotte Constitution was finally passed by Kansas and rejected by the US Senate until 11 slave states seceded from the Union. Kansas became a state on January 29, 1861.

Because of the decision to let the local people vote on whether Kansas should be slave or free.

Every bully-boy in America, from both sides, descended on this thinly-populated state to intimidate voters and declare the results to be rigged. Newspapers used the term "bleeding Kansas" in reporting the events . This was really true after John Brown and his sons killed several people.

Because when Kansas was chosen to be a state to choose its laws about slavery the people from the south and north went there to try to make it a slave or free state, then fighting broke out and lives were lost, that's why its called bleeding Kansas.

The Senator Stephen Douglas act of popular sovereignty had passed the Congress in order to allow voters to decide before a territory became a state, on whether it would a "slave or free" state. Later the US Supreme Court in the Dred Scott case nullified any Congressional act or provision regarding slavery. Thus it took the 13th Amendment to fix that problem.
