Organized as a territory by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, Kansas became a virtual battleground for free and slave fractions (1854-1859) because it bordered on the slave state of Missouri and harbored many slaveholders as well as Yankee free-staters.

On May 25, 1856, the militant abolitionist JOHN BROWN led a raid against proslavery supporters at Pottawatomie Creek, Kansas, killing five persons: James Doyle and his two sons, Allen Wilkinson, and William Sherman, all proslavery partisans.

The violence between the abolitionists and those who were proslavery soon gave the territory the name "Bleeding Kansas."

Because of what happened when Kansas became the first new state where the slavery issue was put to a local vote.

Every bully-boy in America (from both sides) descended on this thinly-populated area, and tried to influence the vote, either by buying cheap properties to qualify for the electorate, or by intimidating voters and trying to declare the ballots to be non-valid.

There was much bloodshed, and some called these the first shots of the Civil War.

Following the passage of the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854, Abolitionists from the New England states flocked to Kansas to try and see to it that the Kansas territory entered the Union as a Free State. Meanwhile, people in Missouri were interested in seeing Kansas enter as a slave state. Both sides set up Territorial governments and claimed to be the legitimate government of the Kansas Territory. Violence soon erupted between the two sides and bloodshed became rampant. Abolitionist John Brown who later became infamous for attempting to start the Civil War early with his raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia was responsible for the massacres of pro-slavery settlers along the Pottawatomie Creek near Osawatomie. Kansas entered the Union in January of 1861 as a Free State. Several months later the Civil War started at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Even so, Southern sympathizers from Missouri led by William Quantrill carried out raids in Kansas and in 1863 they burned Lawrence and massacred many of its citizens.

The policy in affect that caused a problem was termed popular sovereignty.

After the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, voters in both territories were able to vote on the issue of slavery in advance of their territory being admitted to the Union. Both pro and anti-slavery people in Kansas used violence against each other over the issue. This gave Kansas the monitor of "bleeding Kansas". Kansas did become a state in 1861 as a free state.
