But to put it in a sentence or two, he was the first to understand that history has been one long story of misery and exploitation but towards the end of it all there will be the materials needed for humanity to construct a new world free of war, poverty and misery. I think it would be unfair to Marx to call him the father of modern communism. First Marx never laid out the form or function of a communist state. Second what ever advice he may have given for how communism might work were severly corupted by Lenin.

I would argue Marx is important because he was one of the first philospophers to acknowledge the problems of and attempt to help the new urban poor. Capitalism is clearly a great economic engine, but escpecially during the 19th century it largely failed to spread any of that economic advantage to factory workers. Marx saw and wrote about this failure, and for that reason I think he was important.
