It was not formally banned, but it was effectively banned in two ways. First, from the Restoration and the revival of theatre in England in the 1660s to 1838, everybody thought the ending was too depressing. The play was rewritten with a bunch of new dialogue by Nahum Tate so that it became a happy romantic comedy with Cordelia and Edgar overcoming a number of obstacles to end up getting married and living happily ever after. This was the only version of the play which producers would produce and which audiences would put up with for over 150 years until William Macready's production of the actual Shakespeare play in 1838.
In the middle of this period, King George III of England went insane, and it became politically incorrect to portray any insane king on stage. As a result, nobody performed King Lear between 1811 and 1820, not even in the Tate version.
