The 1st answer to this question is totally wrong. Basically the people who first answered this question is young and know nothing about the Vietnam history especially the Vietnam war. Ngo Dinh Diem was killed by CIA; not only Ngo Dinh Diem but also JFK. Ngo Dinh Diem didn't want US role involved too much in Vietnam because he know that if the American controlled the South Vietnam, North communists ( Ho Chi Minh ) would blame for that reason and brainwashed people more easier. Because of that, CIA did kill Ngo Dinh Diem.

anti communist group leader
He was anti-communist.
A man that hated communism, and for that reason, was accepted by the Kennedy administration (in the beginning); See: Diem.
President Diem talked about making South Vietnam a true democracy - but he used a very autocratic style of leadership and didn't expand democratic rule in his country. He also… was a Catholic - anathema to the traditional Buddhist monk religious leadership at that time. The Buddhists strongly and publicly protested while the U.S. chose to withdraw support for Diem. He was captured and killed in a military coup 'sponsored' by the U.S. government.
He was Catholic. In response to him trying to change the national religion, Buddhist monks burned themselves alive.
The United States.
The most accepted theory to this is that he was assassinated by his own generals when he surrendered after they promised him and his brother safe passage from Vietnam to The U…S, he and his brother died.
Ngo Dinh Diem was born on January 3, 1901 to a noble Vietnamese Catholic family. A strong anti-Communist, he joined the United States backed government, and made himself p…resident in 1955. While in power, he imprisoned and murdered hundreds of Buddhists, this caused the U.S. oppose him. Diem was assassinated in 1963 and this left Vietnam vulnerable to the Communist threat from the north which resulted in civil war. His uncompromising rule and overthrow, paved the way for the Vietnam War.
