Industrialization played a large role in the development of total war in WWI. As weapons and other necessities for soldiers began to be mass produced, the companies producing these items soon became a taget of the enemies. Military forces would burn factories to the ground in order to prevent suppies from getting out.

World War 1 was considered a 'total war' because everyone, including civilians, helped in the war effort by eating less, drinking less coffee, using less resources, etc. This was so resources could be shipped to their armies.
