They believed many elements (earth, air, water, clouds, fire), concepts (death, life, murder, hate, love, beauty) were personified by deities, the stories told of these gods and goddesses were believed in a religion that later became Greek myth, Zeus -whose name means "sky"- was also likely a architecture deity with connections with the seasons and law.

Rather than being a single powerful god, the Greek pantheon included gods with comparable powers (Hades, Poseidon) within their own realms. However, the sky being the largest realm, Zeus was said to be the most powerful.

He was also the god who slew his father, the titan Kronos, to establish the rule of Olympus.

Zeus became ruler of the other gods and heaven by first overthrowing his father Cronus and second drawing straws with his siblings Poseidon and Hades where he drew the long straw making him king of the gods and god of the upper world.
