Back in the old days before there were computers there had to be a way for letters and other business correspondence to be saved. Rather than type the letter several times, it was discovered that one could use a pressure sensitive piece of carbon between two ordinary pieces of typing paper and get a copy of the original without typing twice. This was a great time saver because there were as many as four copies that could be made of the same letter.

There were no PCs, no faxes, no copy machines or emails. Everything was done by hand on typewriters. So the typist had to copy letters and invoices and everything else by hand on paper with a typewriter. Carbon paper helped make things easier.

When was carbon paper invented?

Carbon paper is thin paper coated with a mixture of wax and pigment, that is used between two sheets of ordinary paper to make one or more copies of an original document. The exact origin of carbon paper is somewhat uncertain. The first documented use of the term "carbonated paper" was in 1806, when an Englishman, named Ralph Wedgwood, issued a patent for his "Stylographic Writer." However, Pellegrino Turri had invented a typewriting machine in Italy by at least 1808, and since "black paper" was essential for the operation of his machine, he must have perfected his form of carbon paper at virtually the same time as Wedgwood, if not before. Interestingly, both men invented their "carbon paper" as a means to an end; they were both trying to help blind people write through the use of a machine, and the "black paper" was really just a substitute for ink.

What is the history of carbon copy?

A carbon copy is made by using carbon paper. Carbon paper is a very thin sheet of paper coated on one side with a film of carbon in suspension. The carbon paper is placed between two sheets of paper when intending to write or type (with a typewriter) on one of the sheets and to produce a duplicate of the writing on the second sheet of paper. It is important to have the carbon side of the carbon paper resting on the paper that will be the duplicate. The term "carbon copy" (abbreviated cc) is used to indicate the duplicate. Now, when it is possible to create duplicate copies by other means, the term "carbon copy" continues to be used to refer to the duplicate copies.
