the temple was so important to Jesus because it was his fathers house and he could never let anyone harm the temple in anyway it was the place were people went to pray and were they go to sacrafice a unblemished lamb it was there religion. The author of Luke's Gospel and Acts of the Apostles is known to have used material from the works of Josephus, and this passage might have been inspired by the following quote from Josephus' Autobiography, published in 90 CE: "When I was a child, and about fourteen years of age, I was commended by all for the love I had to learning; on which account the high priests and principal men of the city came then frequently to me together, in order to know my opinion about the accurate understanding of points of the law."
As with Josephus, the story of Jesus shows him as having a sound knowledge of scripture at an early age, in fact even earlier than Josephus. It also shows (Luke 2:49) that Jesus already knew that he was about his Father's business.
