This is because girls were considered not "important". They were expected to care for children, please their husbands, and cook and clean the household. Therefore they did not get educated in various subjects, but they did learn about how to be a proper, respectful woman. Boys practically were to run their families and hold all the power and everything in the household. They had more freedom than women, and had more rights. They had to be educated.
