The straightforward meaning of 'Much Ado about Nothing' is 'A great deal of fuss about something which isn't very important'. Since the play is based on a series of misunderstandings (Beatrice and Benedict are tricked into falling in love, Claudio is tricked into believing Hero has been unfaithful to him) this is a good title.

There is also a deeper meaning, In Elizabethan English - as in Modern English - a man has a 'thing'. But in Elizabethan English you could also say that a woman has 'no thing'.

Shakespeare loved the pun - his Sonnet 20 is all about it.

You will have to think this idea through for yourself - but the longer you spend on it, the better it gets.
