The War Between the States was the first war in which Photography was widely used by Matthew Brady,Alexander Gardner and others to capture the terrible reality of warfare. The public was repulsed when photographs of the mangled dead bodies of soldiers were put on public display and the Horror was made real to people who were otherwise removed and insulated from the true nature of war. On a less emotional level photography allowed the images of the famous as well as the common soldier and the statesmen to be captured and preserved for future generations.

It changed how people viewed war. Until Mathew Brady came alone and took photos of the battle scenes with the dead bodies people had no idea what real war was like. It was the first war to be covered in detail photos and thousands were taken by Brady and his crew. He wanted to document the war on a grand scale and had a corp of photographers follow the troops. He didn't make much money on his photos, but he did change our view of war and made photography into an art. During the Viet Nam war much the same thing happened with the war seen on TV by millions each night. Because of it the protests against our involvement in the war grew and grew. Have you noticed you see very little war footage on Iraq? No mistake.
