The name is derived from the Latin name Tepre Pacificum, 'peaceful sea', bestowed upon it by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

Pacific means peaceful. Ferdinand Magellan named the Pacific Ocean 'pacific', after passing through the Straits of Magellan and around Cape Horn, because it seemed so calm and peaceful in comparison to the stormy waters he had just sailed through.

The name, Pacific Ocean, is derived from the Latin for "Peaceful Sea"

Apparently the first explorers saw it on a calm day or wanted to convince people to explore it further and gave it a name that implies that it was not dangerous ( We call this pitting a good spin on something today)
