The British had been overconfident that the Japanese would attack from the sea and thus pointed the naval defenses towards the sea. They even described Singapore as an "impregnable fortress". Moreover, the weapons that the British had were far weaker than those of the Japanese. The British found it unnecessary to use tanks in the jungle while The Royal Air Force could offer the ships no protection as their planes had already been destroyed by the Japanese. Hence, the battleship "Prince of Wales" and the battle cruiser "Repulse" were sunk by fast Japanese torpedo bombers. The British soldiers in Singapore were recruits, with little fighting experience. To their disadvantage, Lt. Gen Percival, leader of the British forces, was less experienced in jungle warfare compared to Japanese Lt Gen Yamashita.

The 1942 attack on Singapore was important in World War II because Singapore was considered a vital part of the British Empire and supposedly impregnable as a fortress. Singapore's surrender was showing the world that Japan was a force to be afraid of.

The British government heavily underestimated the Japanese Army. They had been told that they were poor fighters, and they assumed they would be no match for the great power of the British Army. The Japanese onslaught through the Peninsula took everyone by surprise, and the British plans were lost in the rush to defend Singapore.

i hope that helps :)

The British army in Singapore did not expect an attack to Singapore from Malaysia. Malaysia was full of forests and the middle stretch was all mountainous areas. In addition, there were more than 100,000 soldiers of the British army situated in Malaysia. In this case, the British army placed all the major cannons facing the sea. The naval defence of Singapore was formidable.

However, the Japanese troops invading South East Asia were specially trained for battles in jungles. This gave them an advantage over the British soldiers garrisoned in Malaysia at that time, who were predominantly trained for desert warfare.

Hence, Malaysia quickly fell into the hands of the Japanese. The troops in Singapore were all soldiers that retreated back here from Malaysia. In addition, the British army were not as well equipped as the Japanese, who had mini-tanks that were capable of travelling through jungles.

When the British were faced with an army of low morale and lack of proper equipment, they could do nothing but hand over Singapore to the invaders.

There are actually a few. You can judge for your own which is the main one

Firstly, General Percival underestimated the Japanese power. The British thought that the Japanese were inferior to them. Ironically, the Japanese were way more advanced in terms of their technology. The Japanese 'Zero' fighter planes destroyed more than half of the British old and outdated planes.

Secondly, General Percival did not have a very good intelligence service. For example, he did not know that the Japanese were outnumbered by the British almost 3:1, but thought that the British were the ones who were outnumbered. The Japanese General Yamashita was gambling on his ignorance of this to surrender, which he did.

Thirdly, the Japanese intelligence was very wide. They had fishermen in the straits do surveys of the areas of Malaya and Singapore; Japanese people who owned lands in Malaya and Singapore; Japanese photographers who owned studios in both Malaya and Singapore to take photographs of roads, railways and military installments; and lastly, Japanese military who operated incognito. An example would be Colonel Tsugunori Kadomatsu waitered 6 years at British Officer's Club.

Lastly, the British were distracted by the war in Europe and North Africa. The British would protect their homeland first before defending other places. Therefore, there was a priority to the war in Europe against Germany. The best troops and equipment were being used in Europe, and they did not have enough resources to divert to the South-East Asian (SEA) colonies as Britain was financially drained after the first world war. Also, after the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse sunk off the coast of Kuantan, the British could not spare any more ships, thus losing a strong naval presence in the far east.

Japan captured Singapore from England; Britain surrendered her military unconditionally. Many of the soldiers in Singapore, regardless of their race, were held as POWS (prisoners of war).
