On July 7, 1971, the voting age was dropped from 21 to 18 when the 26th amendment to the US Constitution was certified as having been ratified. The main argument given in favor of the amendment was that since 18-year olds were subject to be drafted into military service, they should be allowed to vote. To put it another way - if you can be required to risk your life and maybe die for the country, you should have a voice in choosing the people who run the country.
