Because they barly had any food left and they were starving most the time
the starving time
indians gave them food that winter
The winter of 1609-1610 was called "the starving time" by the colonists. people were reduced to eating berries, plants, and acorns. There wre even reports of cannibalism. this was how the reorganization almost destory Jamestown. Welcome, Savannah Marie Dean
The reasons why the Starving Time occurred was because 1)the Indians (the Powhatan) got mad at the Englishmen for not trading, so they made sure that they couldn't get to their stockade outside of the town. Another reason is because all of the men there were greedy, and whenever they could find food, they would eat it. This lead to no more food in the middle of winter.
