When Edward the Confessor died, there was no direct heir to the throne and the throne was passed to Harold Godwinson. Then William claimed that Edward the confessor had promised the throne to him. So they fought at The Battle of Hastings for the throne.

The battle was fought because when the king of England died the crown was claimed by the Saxon earl Harold Godwinson.

However the Norman duke William of Normandy (just across the English channel )believed that the crown had been promised to him.

So bang, crash, wallop and William got it back at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

William led the Normans and Harold led the Saxons (English).

Harold was crowned king earlier in the year but William was angry that he wasn't crowned king so he started a battle against the Saxons.
