They were invented to store music instead of a tape.

Compact Discs (CD's) were created as a means of providing a more superior way of storing music without all the drawbacks that vinyl records and magnetic tape had at the time. Vinyl records are played on a record turntable with a stylus, or needle, to read the information on the vinyl record. Over time, the record would wear out from numerous plays, as the needle would gradually wear out, and also cause damage to the record through skips and clicks/pops that could be heard through the speakers of a sound system. Magnetic tape relied on a tape head to make contact and read information off of a spool of recordable tape. Like records, magnetic tape made contact with the tape head, and over time, would degrade due to the numerous plays on a tape player. Also, magnetic tape could get damaged, thus making the sound quality sound muffled or the tape could break, making it worthless.

Compact Discs eliminated most of the problems vinyl and tape had in common. The musical information on a CD is stored underneath a protective layer of thin plastic, thus minor scratches wouldn't affect performance. CD's are read by a pin point laser system, meaning nothing touches the CD, unlike records with a needle, and magnetic tape with a metal tape head. There is no degrading from a CD because there is no wear and tear from the playing device. CD's can be played thousands of times, and sound the same each time you play it. The sound quality is more superior as a result.

Why a CD drive cannot run a DVD while a DVD player is able to run cds?

Well now, think about it. CDs were invented years before DVDs, so it's likely that CD drives will not incorporate the advanced technology needed to run DVDs.

Kayla has x Cds in her music collection if miriam has 7 fewer Cds than Kayla how many Cds does Miriam have?

Since there isn't enough data to actually find the number of Cds miriam has, we must simply write and expression for the number of Cds she has. Since Kayla has x Cds and Miriam has seven less;Miriam has x-7 Cds.
