There are many factors behind the suburbanization and sprawl in the United States from the 1950s to the present. The first involved the incidence of "white flight" as many European Americans left the cities to get away from the poverty, crime, excessive taxation-regulations, and urban decline. The second came from better living quality and private land ownership (homes) available in the suburbs and rural area outside overpopulated centers. A third factor was the ownership of the personal cars which allowed for them to commute from cities to the suburbs readily and independently.

Suburbs were developed due to the "white fight." White Americans moved away from the urban city and the African Americans that had moved into the city during WWII because of available jobs left by the white males fighting in the war. White citizens were able to move out of the city because transportation into the city was easier at this point in history.

Much of the growth of suburbia in the 1950's is attributed to the construction of the interstate highway. Hope that helped.
