tanks were sort of useful during ww1: they were slow (top speed was approx 3 mph) weak armor that could be penetrated by small arms fire, and they realized poison gas to the crew, but they were also a tremendous phychological advantage, imagine a giant block of metal rolling towards you shooting, it was terrifying to soldiers who had never seen them before
