The Mongols were able to control vast amounts of territory for several reasons. They never left garrisons in towns they conquered. They either killed or drove away the populations, leaving nothing behind. They took as prisoners artisans, men of military age for their armies. They often used their prisoners to help them assault the next target by having the prisoners working on the fortifications and ditches they might need for the next battle. As prisoner soldiers, they had no choice but to cooperate, if they did not they would be killed.
They were NOT able to hold on to a large amount of territory. They were not empire builders and after Genghis Khan died his land holdings split up.
