You must have a permanent magnet in the field or residual magnetism that produce magnetic flux lines across the rotating conductors. Without an energized coil (electromagnet) or permanent magnet near the conductors, the motor will never be able to create electricity.

What voltage is generally used for field excitation?

For a small generator like the 125 Watt Alternator/Generator in your car, 12 Volts at a couple Amps. For a large 1,200,000,000 Power Plant Generator typical excitation is 600V at 8000A.

What is back motor effect in generator?

When current is induced in the rotating coil in an electric generator then a counter couple acts on the current carrying rotating coil in the magnetic field(in accordance to the principle of dc motor). This counter couple is called back motor effect.

Does nuclear energy create electricity?

Nuclear energy creates heat, which can be used to generate electricity via a steam turbine or thermal couple. Most often nuclear energy refers to the fission process where a Uranium atom splits into Throrium and Cesium atoms. The process of splitting generates heat which in turn can be used to create steam for a steam turbin generator to produce electricity. In other applications, decay heat from radioactive material can be used as a source for a thermal couple such as the ones used on most deep space satellites.

An alternator could be severely damaged mechanically in attempting to sychronize it with the power line under what two conditions could this happen?

I'm not sure this qualifies as two different conditions, they are both similar. If the generator is more than a few degrees out of phase. If the generator phase angle is leading at the exact moment it closes to the bus.Explanation for #2: When manually syncing a generator, it is quite difficult to close the breaker at exactly 0 degrees, which is, of course, the desired outcome. If you close the breaker with the generator lagging a few degrees, the bus voltage (utility or other generator) will attempt to speed up the generator as if it were starting a motor. No harm done if the phase difference is just a few degrees. If, on the other hand, you close the breaker while the generator is leading, the bus voltage attempts to 'yank' the generator back to where it belongs, like a brake. If the phase difference is great enough, this can shear driveplates and even break crankshafts! The operator, then, shoots for zero to a couple degrees lagging when the breaker closes.
