Need to know what year the engine is, that you changed the heads on and what it is in.
If you think of an engine as an air pump, you will be on the right path. The more air you put through it, the more power you get out of it. So, bigger heads, with the support of a larger intake, and carb. Then, you have to move it into the cylinder combustion chamber, so, bigger heads, need bigger valves, and a larger cam, to keep the valves open further, and longer, and of course an exhaust system large enough, but not too large as to lose all back pressure.
No, 283 has too small a bore. The old power pack heads that came on some 283's were 202,160's, so I would think the 305 heads should work just fine. Not sure about the resulting compression ratio though. The 305 intake might be aluminum, which would be lighter than the 283 intake.
TO GAIN MORE HORSE POWER YOU NEED TO PUT A BIGGER TURBO AND TO BOOST THE PSI. Bigger, Fuel injectors,ECM upgrade, Intake, bigger intercooler, Exhaust.ect ect....
i wouldn't do it the vortec heads will have a diffrent port for the intake and intake mounting so you would need to replace the whole top end and in the big motors you can run into push rod angle problems but prolly not in a 78 easiest way to get the power you want is to put aluminum heads on or a power package from edelbrock, weiand, world, summit, jegs, or anyother major company
install 350 heads with bigger valves works well for more torque at lower speeds
yes but not much gives you higher revs and better fuel economy
Port and polish Exhaust Manifolds. heads, etc. Cold Air Intake. Turbo. Bigger injectors. performance Cam, rocker rollers, etc. New exhaust system or High flow Catalytic Converter
Intake manifolds are designed to optimize power in a specific rpm range. The best intake manifold is one that optimizes the rpm range you need. If it's a street engine, you probably need one that creates peak torque in a lower range than a race engine. A 2-plane manifold such as the Performer or Performer RPM is good for the street. A single-plane such as the Victor Jr. works better on the race track.
vortec heads will give you more power than any stock older heads but require a different intake and have small combustion chambers so make sure you dont get your cr to high and check for valves hitting the piston
Yes you can upgrade to a 350 but only if it is an Oldsmobile 350 and you will need to use small block olds toronado intake from a 307 so you will have hood clearance-you may need to enlarge ports in intake to match 350 head ports but probably not much. You can use your 307 heads on the 350 but I would put bigger valves in those heads before I used them with a 350 and porting would not hurt if you want much performance. The Olds 350 will have a lot more power stock than the 307
trucks especially are designed for low rpm power and torque. i would suspect a cam, intake and exhaust modification would take care of this. possibly a set of heads, too.
Short answer is yes. But unless you use the same model intake you will have to "hog out" the center bolt holes on the manifold. This is due to the angle of the bolts. With the holes slotted or elongated it will still seal fine. I owned a '78 Chevy PU with this mod done to it with no problems. buy edelbrock intake and u'll make good power with those heads.
