Why would someone want to visit Mars?

There would be many reasons, depending on the person but the most likely would probably be :-

1. Experiencing another world and wondering how different it would be.

2. To mine the planet for iron ore and other elements.

3. To collect scientific information about the planet.

4. To build a civilization on the planet.

5. To try terraforming the planet.

To be the first to set foot upon another world. The name of Neil Armstrong will remain in the history books of the people of earth so long as there are people on earth. To set foot upon another world--that alone is a very compelling reason--whether you were first to do so or not.

A fair question. It would take almost a year to get there, and once you're there you will need to keep wearing a spacesuit. You would need to protect yourself from high energy particles emitted from the Sun since there is no magnetic field. The main reason to go there is to find out why Mars was suddenly stopped from evolving into an Earth like environment. To find any life and compare any organisms with those of Earth in order to check if life came to Earth from Mars.

If you went to mars we could build a base forbid to live on if earth somehow becomes uninhabitable. It could also serve as a dock for space ships that would go further into space. But I don't think we are quite there yet.

Nobody has yet travelled to Mars, it is too far away, the furthest mankind has travelled is to the moon. There are plans to land man on the surface of Mars, of course, but the most optimistic timeline I have heard for this is fifteen years out.
