Why would the convertible top on a 1990 Pontiac Sunbird not go up or down using the switch?

The top motor is shot. I had this problem with my 1991 Chevy Cavalier and all I did was unhook the hydraulics from the top itself after removing the hoses from the motor itself. Press the rode from the hyfraulics down as far as they go, but make sure you have a bucket to put the hoses in because fluid will poor out. I only did this because a motor is expensive and I don't see the problem with pushing the top down and pulling it up. It makes it a lot faster.
If when you press on the switch and it click your problem is the top cylinder and if iit is too expensive to fix just disconect the cylinder their is two coter pin on each cylindergerrybelca@Yahoo.com

How do you change the top on a convertible eclipse?
1. Tape newspaper onto your Spyder's window's and windshield using masking tape. This will protect your windows from damage during the replacement.2 Remove the clips from the rear deck using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the Phillips screw using the screwdriver.
