The rumor now (August 2011) is that the new iPhone 5 will be launched in September or October, 2011. It will be available on Sprint and T-Mobile in addition to AT&T and Verizon. Source for the rumor is a stock analyst who covers Apple. There are various other reports that Apple has posted new jobs near Sprint HQ in Missouri; that new iphone training is being initiated; and in the last investor conference call, Apple execs have adjusted iphone sales forecasts for iPhone 4, for an ambiguous reason typically attributed to the launch of a new model.
The new iphone 5 is to have the new iOS5, dual A5 processors like ipad 2, and also likely be a GSM/CDMA phone that can work internationally. This last item would make a lot of sense for Apple, as it would only have to produce 1 phone to work on all carriers/networks, rather than 2- one for AT&T/GSM and another for Verizon/CDMA. This would make the new iphone internationally capable, which would be a big plus.
no only at&t has a contract with apple to only let them carry the i phone. other major carriers are trying to get the i phone
