If you do it when your computer is turned on, then yes it could be. You may lose some data or even damage it further, so it is never advisable to do it. Always shutdown your computer completely before unplugging it. If you unplug it when it is switched off then there is no problem.

it is generally considered a bad idea unplugging your computer when it's in full swing, because the hardware safety measures (e.g. power down of hard disks) can't take effect and thus you can cause potential damage to your hardware.

It will, as long as you can also protect it from unauthorized physical access. Keep in mind that "unplugging" here also means disconnecting wireless connections and disabling these devices. Simply leaving all networks still leaves the machine exposed (though to a much lesser degree).

As they say - if you want your computer secure, unplug it from the wall! ;)
