A lot of women worked as servants, teachers, factory workers and nurses. Things had already changed quite a bit and women were increasingly studying at universities to become doctors, journalists, scientists and even architects. It also varied between different Western Countries. In the USA women did not have as many opportunities as in a country like Sweden (where women had been part of guilds and ran business for centuries).
There were not many work related roles for women in the 1900s. Most women were homemakers while others were teachers, maids, nurses, and a very few doctors.
