A white puddle is a simile for snow. A simile is a figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared. If snow is melting it would look like a white puddle.

Example: I went to the park after the snow storm last night. This afternoon was very warm, and the sun melted some of the snow...making it look like white puddles.
