i DONT KNOW THAT'S WHY I AM ASKING!!!!!!!!!!!! He didn't care for parties. He learned that the "party" he supported was starting to call themselves "federalists" who believed in strong central government. His opponents called themselves Republicans because they believed in the liberties of the American people. He believed in both and loudly proclaimed so, that parties would tear this country apart. In today's time Republicans are what would have been Democrats and the "Federalists" of his time would now be Republicans.

By today's standards, Abraham Lincoln would most likely not be a Republican... He would more than likely have been a democrat... but being part of a third party would be another strong possibility for Lincoln, though he would then likely have not been as successful a politician as he was in the 1800's

Was Abraham Lincoln democrat or republican?

Abraham Lincoln was Republican, and the Republican Party's first US President. (It should be noted that the Republican party of the 1860s, like the Democratic party, was far different from the parties of today.) Shortly after he first entered politics in 1832, Abraham Lincoln joined the newly formed Whig party, and remained a devoted member until 1852, shortly before the destruction of the party. The Whig party dismantled in 1856 when members became deeply divided over the issue of slavery. Before leaving the Whigs, Lincoln ran for a seat in the Illinois State Legislature. He won but ended up declining to take the seat, because he wanted to run for Senator. He then left the Whigs and briefly joined the "Know Nothing Party," a minor political party, which stemmed from the now defunct Whigs. In 1856, he joined the Republican Party, and was nominated by the party as the Senatorial candidate in the 1858 Senate race, in which he lost to Democrat incumbent Stephan Douglas, the most powerful man in the Senate. In early 1860, Lincoln was invited by a faction of the New York Republicans to deliver a speech on the abolition of slavery. His "Cooper Union" speech in New York made the claim that the federal government's power was restricted when it came to limiting slavery in the territories. Lincoln then was nominated by the Republican Party as their Presidential candidate in July of 1860. He won the presidential race on November 6, 1860 by electoral votes, but only gained a little more than 40% of the popular vote.Lincoln was re-elected to a second presidential term in the 1864 election, and remained a member of the Republican Party until his untimely death in April 1865.No, he was a republican. He was elected twice as president, but was assassinated before he could complete his second term on April 14th 1865 and he died on April 15, 1865.

How would reconstruction been different if Abraham Lincoln had lived?

Before Lincoln died, He told his acquaintances, "For once in my life as President, I find myself in a position to give everybody something!" Lincoln died within 10 hours of being shot in the head at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865. Abraham Lincoln might have survived being shot if today's medical technology had existed. However, Lincoln would have months of recovery before he could have returned to office, and whether he would have been able to communicate is unclear. Johnson, who took office after Lincoln's death, was the only Southern senator not to leave office upon secession. Lincoln had put him on the presidential ticket as a symbol of unity, but Johnson was a southern Democrat who was not sympathetic to Lincoln's Republican Party or to helping the newly-freed slaves.

What was the wigs political party position on slavery?

Most of the men in the Whigs Party were opposed to slavery but not all of them. Because the Democrat Party was mostly supportive of slavery and held the majority in Congress, the Whigs were not as effective in ending slavery. Abraham Lincoln was part of the Whigs Party and then helped launch the Republican Party. The Republican Party nominated Lincoln for President and he beat his Democrat opponent, carrying all the Northern States. This would become the beginning of the end of slavery as Lincoln has been credited with that great accomplishment.
