Absolutely. They raise you up, and they raise you down! This then makes you entirely dependant on them, not only for your self-esteem but gradually making you feel like you cannot exist without them or their input in your life. Its all about controlling you.

No. They will "put you on a shelf" and pull you off and on while they're looking for "something better". They won't fully let go until they find it.

They would probably become enraged that you confronted them and devalue you again. Maybe you could try disarming the devaluing so it has no power. If they say you have never amounted to anything in your life why start now? Say you know your right, but I will keep trying. If you trigger shame in them they will become mad. They cannot or will not face shame or anything that does not paint the picture they fanatsize about in their head about themselves.
