Sounds like your heater core has a leak and is causing steam to enter your air ducts. Does the steam have a coolant oder, if so, you will have to pull it and replace.

Steam may be coming out the air conditioning unit if the engine is overheating. The best thing to do would be to shut the vents before any hazardous fumes begin to come out.

It is not smoke. It is steam. Moisture is making the gurgling sound and moisture coming in contact with a warmer surface (the coil) is evaporating making steam.
Front heater core is in the dash, the rear heater core is all the way in the back of the vehicle. If you have steam coming out of the dash vents, the front HC is leaking. If you have steam coming out of the rear heater vents, then the rear core is leaking.

That "mist" is more than likely coolant steam coming from a leaky heater core. Replacing the heater core is your best option.
