I'm in the same situation as you and I have set up a surgery-only fund that is based on the Stock Market. There are several companies that offer accounts for mutual funds, stocks, etc. I have an account with Scottrade (probably the 2nd cheapest I know of) and I have been buying Metalico (MEA) stock and Asian Tiger Fund (GRR). Metalico being more risky but it has grown over 150% this year. Major mutual funds have little risk over a 5-year period where stocks can be risky but more rewarding. I can't stress how important it is to have the best credit report as possible and work as much as possible. I work as a woman but even if you are still working as a man it is 100 percent bettar than not working at all. Watch Business Journal on PBS weeknights, that will give you insight as they periodically have analysts that give advice. I'm a novice with the market, but I think if you went with a company such as GE, Microsoft, Cisco or even any big oil (Exxon, BP, Chevron, ConcoPhillips) you'll be a woman in no time(: Michelle
