perhaps the leak is somewhere else. may be you have not been taken for a ride but your mechanic did not follow proper procedures to pinpoint the problem he was more interested in your money and not on finding your problem. you need to run your engine and then '''carefully not to injure your self''' take a look and see for your self where the coolant is leaking from.
my advise, start by looking at your hoses and look at where they connect to. look at the thermostat housing and the heater hoses. also around the engine block look at the freeze plugs.(they may rust and leak)
also you got to watch the water pump on that perticular car, usually its the 3.1 motor that has alot of problems with the water pump and head gasket. my 98 Malibu kept loosing coolent without leaking any, that's when I knew it was the head gasket.
Remove spark plugs and crank engine to blow coolant out. Put plugs back in and start engine. Pull inside garage to repair, or leave radiator cap loose and take to mechanic to replace gaskets if engine is not overheating too quickly to get it there.
Don't drive it! Have it towed to a garage that can flush the system, replace the radiator and hope that the transmission is not damaged.
They usually top up the washer fluid, coolant and the antifreeze and check the oil and brake fluid, brakes and tyres.
The Northstar is a good motor, but they do blow head gaskets some times. If the coolant is going above about 230 degrees, or if you are having problems keeping the coolant filled, it sounds like you need head gaskets. The problem is caused by old coolant corroding the head bolt threads out of the block, and the head bolts pull out, releasing the clamping force on the gaskets.Have a garage check the coolant for exhaust gas - this is the best way to diagnose the problem.
It could be from many areas such as the water pump, the radiator, radiator hoses, heater hoses, heater core, freeze plugs, intake manifold gaskets, etc. Take a good flash light and try to locate the source of the coolant leak. If you have no luck that way take it to your local garage and they can pressure test the coolant system to force the leak.
I'd assume that the coolant hasn't been changed in a while. Take it to a garage or if you have the tools do it yourself. If you are not having cooling issues in hot weather, then just drain and replace the coolant included the plastic expansion tank. If there are any cooling issues or leaks, then take it to a garage and ask them to test. The radiator may be clogged inside preventing a free flow of coolant. They will either flush the system or replace the radiator.
yes....as a matter of fact i work in a tire shop/garage and i have put 24's on a 78 malibu wagon!
There are many gaskets and hoses that can leak. If you can't find it take it to a garage.
Look in your owners manual or take it to the Chevy garage.
IF MY GARAGE DOOR REMOTE IS NOT WORKING AS WELL AS IT ONCE DID, IS THERE A BATTERY IN IT THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACE??
send it to a garage???????
you call a garage
