If a force of 500 newtons was applied through a distance of 5 meters,

then the work is (500 x 4) = 2,000 newton-meters, which means

exactly the same thing as 2,000 joules of energy.

Work is done when you apply a force over a distance.

The amount of work is [ (force) multiplied by (distance) ].

-- if you apply 500 N over no distance, you do no work; like pushing on a wall.

-- if you push with a force of 500 N through a distance of 'D' meters, then the work done is [ 500 D ].

Work = (force) times (distance)

= (100 N) times (5 meters) = 500 newton-meters = 500 joules.

The time he spends doing it has no effect on the amount of work done.

If you push with 100n of force, and you keep pushing while the box moves 5 meters,

the you have put out 500 newton-meters (500 joules) of work, but we can't say how

much of that went to the box.

If you lifted the box straight up, then all of that work was done on the box, and it has

that much more potential energy now than it had before. But if you scraped it along the

floor, then all that work went to friction. It wound up heating the floor and the bottom

of the box, and the box doesn't have any of the energy that you spent.
