There are several connections that one could have from a terminal to a mainframe. The easiest to implement on modern hardware is a simple null modem connection. You would need a null modem and a terminal program (HyperTerminal or PuTTy would work fine). You would initiate a connection to the mainframe, and the mainframe would respond with a login prompt. After logging in, you would have access to the command shell.
Most connections worked similar to the above, but some may have had proprietary connectors and / or special controller cards necessary for a terminal to connect.
