Sounds like it could be arthritis. Asprin is okay for dogs. 100 mg per ten pounds of dog. The coated kind is best. ASPRIN. NOT TYLENOL. It will take the swelling down. Give the aspirin once a day...with food.
The top (back) of my dogs rear quarters (both sides of hip), yellow lab - 7 years old, are swollen and he is having a great deal of difficulty getting up and also up and down steps - he has also become lethargic and does not want to move about like he normally does. He had Lyme disease several months ago but was fine after being treated with antibiotics - could it have returned? He seems to be in pain although he doesn't whimper or whine - he never has whenever he was in pain though. I plan to take him to the vet in the morning but concerned and would like your opinion based on my brief description.
An injury to the hips on a dog could cause the animal to become swollen and limp. Another reason for the swelling and limping could be due to a more serious health issue. Seeking the advice and care of a vet is best.
Your back is...swollen? Swollen back IS a symptom.
Falling snow should not make a dogs hips hurt but if a dog has bad hips the cold weather could aggravate them. If there is snow on the ground it can be slippery which could also cause a dogs with bad hips to have more discomfort. Not there lips, but there paws definitely do.

Labrador retrievers are not known for having back problems; they do often have something called hip dysplasia which involves their rear hips.
The dogs strongest part of their body is their back legs.
