It depends on the car and you will still have the steering wheel lock to deal with. Newer cars do not like being hot wired. You can break the steering column but that seems excesive. Wiggle the steering wheel as you try and turn the key.
Four reasons come to mind. Your key is too worn out to work anymore. It's the wrong key. If you have a locking steering wheel, it could be jamming the ignition cylinder... try turning the steering wheel left and right, while turning the key. Or you just need a new ignition lock cylinder.
This has happened to me quite a few times. I've learned from experience that the key will not turn in the ignition if your steering wheel is not locked. For instance, if you parked on a hill or in a parking lot and you didn't feel your steering wheel lock after you parked and took the key out of the ignition. It also depends on if your front wheels are in a certain position. Usually straight.
I gently jiggle the steering wheel back and forth a few times, and that usually makes the key turn. If that doesn't work, try turning on the headlights.
Need more information on this. What is the year, make, and model. Also in what position is the key stuck ... off, accessory, run? Certain vehicles have different reasons for the key being stuck.
Examples are: Toyota's of certain types have split wafers, Saturn's can have the 'push to off' internal button stuck, GM and Chevy's can have spring cap failures and sidebar issues....
Each type requires specific methods. No matter what the situation though, if it can be started don't force the key out in any position other than 'off'. Better is to go to a locksmith and have them get it out. Most are very knowledgeable and have specific knowledge on ignitions and locks.
your battery might be low or there might be a prob with the wireing going to the shifter .... you can try shifting to N or maybe try other gears
If the battery is good and the starter is good, then you must have a wire disconnected somewhere.
check your wiring, if all your wiring is good then test your ignition relay, if its not the starter, not the battery, and not the wiring there's only one thing left. Good Luck with the repair
Check your ingnition cylinder ...
Same thing happened to my 94. Turn your ignition to the on position and take a screwdriver and bridge the two terminals together on the starter. If it turns over it needs a new ignition switch. Good luck on that. They are a pain to replace.
If it does not turn over, but the lights work, you have a bad starter.
its either the starter or your ignition
This could be a bad ignition switch, ignition relay, or ignition fuse.
If the battery is good and the starter is good, then you must have a wire disconnected somewhere.
I have a 1997 grand am and i have power to the starter but when i turn the key over it wont in gauge the starter. all fuses are good. You may have a defective ignition switch.
loose wire somewhere from ignition switch to starter.
Check power from your ignition, and power at the starter
my first thought would be to check the starter . if you can tap on the starter and it starts after that..you have a bad starter .
Starter, battery, battery connections, neutral switch,
may be a bad starter..... or if the engine is cranking with no start it could be the ignition wires
Bad starter or weak battery.
Dead short between ignition switch and starter solenoid trigger wire?
could be the starter
