‘Fifth’: the fifth part in a piece of vocal polyphony. The term was particularly used for printed partbooks in five-voice music, where the quintus part might be for different voices (e.g. ‘discantus 2’ or ‘contratenor 2’) in addition to the standard four.

Quintus (abbreviated Q. or Qu.), fem. Quinta, is a common ancient Roman praenomen. It means "fifth", i. e. "born during the fifth month" or fifth-born son. Parallels are the Roman praenomina Sextus (sixth), Septimus (seventh), Octavius (eight) and Decimus (tenth).
Most references to "Quintus" are of the father of Publius Valerius Laevinus and Publius Decius Mus, Roman senators who fought unsuccessfully against Pyrrhus of Epirus. Quintus was approximately age 60 at around 270 B.C. His time of birth, death, or reign is unfortunately unknown.
