rēgionēs (sing. regio), ‘regions’, at Rome, the four wards into which the city was divided during the republic; these were the Suburana (see SUBURA), which included the Caelian hill, the Esquilina (the Esquiline hill), the Collina, including the Quirinal and Viminal hills, and the Palatina (the Palatine hill). The emperor Augustus divided the city into fourteen new regiones.
