GenOn Energy is getting on with the business of being one of the largest power producers in the US, with a generating capacity of 24,200 MW. GenOn has operations in California, the Mid-Atlantic, the Midwest, the Northeast, and the Southeast. The company was created by the late-2010 merger of RRI Energy with former global power player Mirant. The combination of generating concerns gives GenOn geographic diversity and increased financial strength and flexibility, as well as the benefits of economies of scale. Its customers are principally independent system operators (ISOs), regional transmission organizations (RTOs), and investor-owned utilities.
